Norma Jeane Baker was born an illegitimate child. Her father C. Stanley Gifford never married her mother Gladys Baker. Marilyn Monroe's paternity is still not actually know. There are two possible candidates Stanley Gifford and Edward Mortenson. Marilyn believed that Stanley Gifford was her father after being shown a photo at a young age and being told that he was her father. Norma Jeane spent most of her childhood in and out of foster homes eventually landing in an orphanage. This was due to her mother Gladys, who unfortuately had a nervous breakdown and could not care for Norma Jeane. Norma Jeane did not have a pleasant childhood. Shortly after turning sixteen, on June 19th, 1942, Norma Jeane wed her first husband Jim Dougherty (This was an arranged marriage that lasted until June, 1946 ... 4 years). When Norma Jeane wed her second husband Joe DiMaggio on January 14, 1954 she was no longer known as Norma Jeane. Her new name was Marilyn Monroe (A name that will go on throughout eternity.) Marilyn's marriage toJoe DiMaggio lasted only nine months. They were divorced on October 27th, 1954. (*Joe DiMaggio made all the arrangements for Marilyn's funeral and she was laid to rest holding his flowers) Marilyn wed her third husband, Arthur Miller, on June 29th, 1956. Their marriage lasted five years. They divorced on June 20th, 1961.
